LUDHIANA: Members of 'Charity from Scratch' organized an artificial limb donation camp on Sunday at Freemasons Hall in Sarabha Nagar. They gave prosthetics free of cost to 70 poor people after which around 250 people joined in a community meal.
The charity members had donated nearly 50 artificial limbs last year also.
Over 80 residents joined the camp to support the cause, help as volunteers and donate cash for the organization.
The programme commenced with members Balbir Singh, Rajinder Kapoor, S S Chahal, Sanjeev Kapoor and Aman Soi reading verses from five holy scriptures. Dentist Bhagwant Singh informed the gathering that the charity respects all religions equally.
A team of expert technicians fixed the artificial limbs from 10am till afternoon.
Project coordinator Major C D Soi of Gurdev Nagar said the charity's other projects include a bank of medicines that are provided to doctors in old age homes. ''We also collect surplus household items and clothes. Residents who turned up on Sunday donated a lot of such items that we will distribute among needy people within 15 days. Above all the charity is sponsoring education for capable underprivileged students,'' Soi said.
Prabhjot Singh, who got an artificial right limb at Sunday's camp said, ''I am very happy and feel inspired to do something with my life. The charity is doing a very noble job and I am very grateful to them.''
